Monaco China: Celebration of twenty years of diplomatic relations

On the 18 January 2015, the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Monaco and China was celebrated with the exchange of congratulatory messages between the Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prince Albert II of Monaco.

Prince Albert in his message praised the consolidation and development of the ties between the two countries since 1995 and the mutually beneficial cooperation in economic affairs, education, sports and cultural exchanges.

The Prince reaffirmed his belief that the continuing development of relations and the present celebration of those relations would enhance and strengthen the existing friendship and mutual respect, which would itself promote further bilateral cooperation for the advantage of both nations.

President Xi’s congratulatory message recognised the development of relations between the two nations over the last twenty years, including the consolidation of political trust, which has resulted in effective mutual support in international affairs, and mutual respect, which reflected harmonious coexistence between nations, both large and small.

The cultural and sporting exchanges and the development of people-to- people contacts have brought the two countries closer at all levels. Such exchanges will continue and the countries will together deepen their contacts, the areas of cooperation and friendly relations in the coming years.

Rosemont Monaco welcomes and supports the continuing development of Monaco / China relations and looks forward to the next twenty years with stronger economic and social ties for the mutual benefit of both states.

In an interview to mark the celebration of twenty years of diplomatic relations between China and Monaco, the Monaco Ambassador to China, Mme Catherine Fautrier, highlighted the cultural exchanges between the two countries. Mme Fautrier lent her support to the views recently expressed by President Xi Jinping of China and Prince Albert II of Monaco, that the axes of bilateral cooperation and understanding between nations started with cultural exchanges, before the development of sporting and economic relations.

There are longstanding cultural ties between the Principality and China, which initially opened with the appearance of Chinese performers at the famous annual Circus Festival in Monaco. This year the Chinese Acrobatic Troupe won the prestigious Golden Clown award.

To further the development of cultural relations, the Ambassador announced that following the very successful Chinese Festival last year, a second Festival will take place in Monaco in mid-March 2015. The theme of the Festival will be the cultural diversity of China and will honour the Chinese autonomous region of Inner Mongolia.

The Ambassador added that plans are also well advanced to hold the first Chinese Film Festival in Monaco in 2016.

As well as Chinese culture coming to Monaco, the Monaco Ballet Company will be performing in Beijing and Tianjin in March and the Monaco Philharmonic Orchestra will give a series of concerts in major Chinese towns, including Shanghai, Shenzhen and Xiamen in the course of the summer. There will also be a Monaco Week in June, in both Beijing and Shanghai.

In a major exhibition at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, a variety of art work by Chinese artists has been on display since last year and has proved a popular draw for the Principality’s art lovers. The patron of the exhibition, Mr Victor Hwang, the Chinese billionaire property developer and Monaco resident, celebrated the collaboration with the Oceanographic Museum on the occasion of the Chinese New Year celebrations.

Mr Hwang has been an active patron of the exhibition, being involved in its conception and the detail of its execution. The exhibition, featuring the global plight of sharks, was sparked by a discussion between Mr Hwang and the Museum’s director. Mr Hwang intended making a generous commitment to ecology and created the Parkview Arts Action to manage the exhibition.

The Monaco Ambassador noted that this cultural cooperation has encouraged the increasing development of economic and environmental relations between the two nations.
